An accounting firm planning a Miami hire should settle the job’s scope before choosing a salary range. A role focused on preparing client accounts needs a different brief from one responsible for reviewing audit work or directing an accounting function.
The local wage data offers a useful starting point: the May 2025 median annual wage for Accountants and Auditors was $80,920 in the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–West Palm Beach metro. Turning that benchmark into an approved requisition requires decisions about responsibility, client work, credentials, and the working arrangement.
Decide which job you are funding
Begin with the work the new employee will own and who will review it. For example, an accounting firm might need someone to prepare client financial statements, investigate discrepancies, and explain findings to a manager. That is a clearer starting point than a long list of software names and a “senior accountant” title.
Check the occupational fit before using the numbers:
- Bookkeeping and accounting-clerk work centers on recording, classifying, and checking financial transactions. BLS treats Bookkeeping, Accounting, and Auditing Clerks as a separate occupation
- Accountants and Auditors, SOC 13-2011, covers preparing and examining financial records. Specify whether the opening concerns accounting, tax, or audit work, and the judgment and review responsibilities involved
- A controller position with responsibility for directing financial reporting and overseeing an accounting function needs a separate comparison. BLS describes controllers within Financial Managers
Then separate credentials essential to the actual work from preferences. State why CPA status or a particular specialization matters to this opening; avoid carrying every requirement from an old posting into a new one. Do the same for client-industry knowledge and software experience.
Read Miami as a three county market
The benchmark covers the full Miami–Fort Lauderdale–West Palm Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area: Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach counties. The BLS regional release confirms that boundary.
For Accountants and Auditors, May 2025 OEWS estimates show employment of 30,950 and a location quotient of 1.18. The occupation therefore represents a larger share of metro employment than it does nationally. Employment measures jobs already held; it cannot tell you how many qualified candidates are available for your vacancy. Location quotient measures relative concentration, not willingness to change employers. See the May 2025 OEWS metro data.
Make your own hiring geography explicit. Identify the office, required attendance, client-site travel, and any geographic limits on remote work. A three-county statistical benchmark does not establish a practical commute for every applicant.
Build the salary range around the approved scope
The same May 2025 OEWS series provides these annual wage boundaries for Accountants and Auditors across the metro:
| 10th percentile | 25th percentile | Median | 75th percentile | 90th percentile |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $50,280 | $63,700 | $80,920 | $105,500 | $132,540 |

These figures describe the occupation across industries. They do not isolate accounting firms, a particular service line, or your job level. The 25th and 75th percentiles are wage-distribution boundaries, not automatic junior and senior salary bands. A CPA preference also does not assign the opening to a particular percentile.
Use the distribution to question the proposed budget. Does the role require independent client ownership, review of other employees’ work, or a narrow specialization? Compare those expectations with your internal pay structure and evidence from genuinely comparable openings. Approve a range you can support for this job rather than copying the entire published distribution into the posting.
OEWS wages exclude overtime pay, nonproduction bonuses, and employer benefit costs. Keep those items separate when describing the package and comparing offers. The BLS OEWS definitions explain these limits.
Put the workload in the offer discussion
For an accounting firm, the working calendar belongs in the requisition brief. BLS notes that longer working periods can occur around quarterly audits and tax season in its occupational profile.
Explain what is true at your firm: expected busy periods, normal and peak schedules, client deadlines, travel, review support, and how time away is handled. Describe the actual bonus arrangement and any education or credential support. Avoid a vague promise of flexibility when attendance requirements change during busy periods.
If the budget is fixed, decide which responsibilities can be reassigned or taught. A recruiter needs authority to distinguish an essential capability from a preference before evaluating applicants.
Match demand context to the employer
This example assumes an accounting firm. In Hire Logix, that employer maps to Professional and Business Services, a broader national industry grouping. An accountant hired by an employer in another sector should be assessed using that employer’s industry.
The August 2026 national JOLTS job-openings rate for Professional and Business Services was 5.0%, seasonally adjusted and preliminary. The BLS industry table reports this national measure. Hire Logix compares it with a 6.35% baseline it calculated from the national Professional and Business Services series for January 2022 through July 2026. That comparison provides industry-demand context; it does not measure Miami accountant vacancies.
For this occupation, metro, and employer-industry selection, the default Hire Logix model returned 43/100, labeled Elevated. It combines local employment and concentration, national industry demand, and static occupational preparation and outlook attributes. The score is a planning model, not an observed hiring outcome or a promised fill time. Pay is context and does not enter the difficulty score. Review the methodology and interpretation limits alongside the result.
Approve the brief before posting
Have the hiring manager and recruiter agree on the role’s deliverables, review authority, essential credentials, office expectations, salary range, and full compensation package. Choose interview evidence that matches those decisions, such as explaining a reconciliation issue or reviewing a fictional work sample.
